Styling your property for sale

When it comes to styling your home for sale, less is often more.

The aim of any styling is to create a welcoming environment that allows potential buyers to envisage themselves living in that space.

So, what do we mean? Well, here’s a quick guide to styling your property for sale.

Remove all clutter

Clutter in a home can often make it feel smaller and more crowded than it is.

In the weeks leading up to putting your property on the market, go through your house and remove all extraneous items.

This includes personal photographs and memorabilia.

These items can be boxed up and stored safely during the sales campaign.

Minimal nick nacks

On the note of decluttering, when readying your home for sale, it pays to remove all nick nacks and perhaps just put back one or two key pieces.

These items should tie in with the room’s colour scheme and offer that feel of effortless living.

Assess your furniture

You might be in love with that comfy recliner that dates back a few years, but does it add a stylish touch to the room.

Just as you go through your home to declutter the small items prior to sale, take a long hard look at your furniture.

Overly large furniture can make a room seem small. It can also make a property look dated.

If in doubt, put the item in storage, and pare your furniture back so all rooms look light, bright and welcoming.

Critique that artwork

Artwork can be a very personal choice. It can also date a home or make it look overly crowded. If you have artwork, assess it to ensure it compliments the room and adds to it.

Again, this is the time to go for a more minimalist look, with perhaps just one or two pieces in key areas

Curtains and drapes

If curtains or drapes make the property feel stuffy or look dated, it’s a great idea to remove them prior to putting your home on the market.

You could always replace them with some light bright affordable options, or install blinds instead.

Soft furnishings

Soft furnishings have an incredible ability to tie a room together and make it look inviting.

Even if you don’t paint the property prior to taking it to market, do look at your soft furnishings and see if some well-placed cushions or a throw rug might make it look more stylish and inviting.

Creating a welcoming feel

Styling your home for sale is all about creating a warm, welcoming feel where the property is allowed to put its best foot forward.

That’s where finishing touches like some nice fresh flowers, a bright bowl of fruit or some vibrant indoor plants can add a nice final touch.

Should I call in a professional?

If styling is not your forte, or your furniture is particularly dated, you might want to consider calling in a professional stylist to make your home look as appealing as possible.

If this is something you are considering, have a chat with your agent to see what they think.
