Selling your home in winter
Winter was once considered a quieter time in the property market, but that’s not the case at the moment.
In fact, the cooler months appear to be doing little to take the heat out of a market that’s been going strong since late last year.
That means if you’re considering selling, there’s no time like the present. But what should you do to prepare if you’re looking at selling your home in winter?
The checklist
Regardless of when you intend to sell your property, it’s the little things that add up when it comes to preparing your home for sale.
That means viewing your property with a critical eye, finalising any repairs, decluttering, fixing any obvious issues and tidying up to maximise your property’s street appeal.
But each season also presents unique challenges and benefits when it comes to selling, so here’s how to maximise your property’s potential in winter.
A little warmth
The moment a potential buyer steps into a property in winter, they should feel warm, at ease and like this could be their potential haven.
This is particularly the case in the southern states where winter offers a bit of an extra nip in the air.
On a cold day, do turn on the heating to allow your home to feel warm.
You might also opt to embrace some bright and cheery soft furnishings, such as cushions and throw rugs to add to that cozy feel.
Light bright and airy
Natural light adds definite warmth and appeal to any property, so draw back any curtains or blinds prior to an open home.
If you’re looking to up the ante, take a look around your home in advance of selling and remove any drapes that date your home or restrict light and replace them.
Also consider your colour scheme. Neutral, lighter colours reflect light and add warmth to a property.
Inject some colour
The thing about winter is that can feel a little drab and grey. Inside the home inject a pop of colour with cushions, interior plants, flowers or a bowl of bright fruit.
Then look around your garden. Chances are it won’t be as lush and colourful as summer or spring, so add colour and greenery where you can in the form of ornamentals, hanging plants or potted plants in key locations.
Open homes
Every property has a time of day when it looks its best, and that may change across the seasons. Work with your selling agent to determine the best time of day to showcase your home, in a bid to maximise that available natural light and minimise shadows and darkness.
